On April 21st of 2012, Justin Chiou competed in and won the Kollaboration Boston 2012 show. He played on a stage to hundreds of people in the audience against professional and college artists. This accomplishment is not only exemplary of himself as a musician and full-time student, but is also a tremendous step forward for our chapter at Northeastern University and even all of Pi Delta Psi Fraternity Inc. His success, along with others, proves to the nation and to the city of Boston that Northeastern University Pi Delta Psi is a front runner organization comprised of individuals with talent, charisma, and spirit. Our fraternity is now even bigger and stronger because of Justin.

Throughout the process of competition, Justin always found opportunities to represent our fraternity in every way possible. Whether it be adorning our letters on camera and in the auditions, or even utilizing our call at the end of his final performance, his actions prove that his identification as a brother of Pi Delta Psi was not only a meaningful quality within himself, but that it was also something to be fervently and repeatedly declared to the Asian American community.

This joyful memory and achievement is one that will hopefully be shared and carried on for years to come. So, congratulations Justin. We are so proud of what you are becoming not only as a talented individual, but as a man and a brother. Through your actions, heart, and musicianship, may the letters Pi Delta Psi resonate through in all that you do.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the moon festival, is a harvest festival that takes place annually on the 15th of the 8th month of the Chinese lunar calendar; it has been celebrated for over 3,000 years mainly by Chinese, Taiwanese and Vietnamese people. Traditional customs include lighting lanterns, dragon dances, burning incense and gathering with the family to consume traditionally round pastries known as mooncakes.

This traditional festival is based on different stories and characters of Chinese mythology that revolve around the moon. One particular story is that of Chang’e the wife of Houyi, a famous and powerful archer who was able to shoot down any threat and enemy of mankind. Legend says that during that period of time, there were ten suns that took turns circling the earth, but on one occasion all of the suns approached earth simultaneously, making it unbearable to live. The emperor commanded him to shoot down all but one of the suns and Hou Yi proceeded with the orders, thus saving earth.

The emperor rewarded him the the elixir of eternal life, which the emperor advised against taking immediately and rather prepare himself and fast before taking it; Houyi hid the pill at home. Chang’e however, found this pill which had a beam of light coming out from, and took the pill immediately; she started to float just as her husband walked in and tried to chase after his wife but was unable to stop her as she kept elevating towards the moon.

Once she reached the moon she found a hare which was already there, she coughed out part of the pill and commanded the hare to pound another pill so that she can return to her husband. Houyi built a palace in the sun known as Yang (the sun and male), and Chang’e was known as Yin (the moon and the female principle).

How did you hear about Pi Delta Psi?

I had no idea what greek life was when I was in high school. One of my friends at NEU introduced me to some of the brothers during Welcome Week and got interested from then on.

Why did you join Pi Delta Psi?

I joined Pi Delta Psi because I wanted to become part of a new brotherhood besides my hometown friends. Pi Delta Psi’s four pillars are goals that I try to reach even before becoming a brother. Having these goals, joining Pi Delta Psi was very important to me because my goals are the same goals the brothers strive to achieve.

Has Pi Delta Psi changed you since you became a brother?

Pi Delta Psi changed since I have became a brother by giving me more knowledge to not only my background but society. I’ve also become more aware of the different cultures that make up this world. It has pushed me to strive for my goals harder and stronger and motivated me to leave a mark on this campus and the community.

What is your most memorable moment since you became a brother?

My most memorable moment since I’ve been a brother was going to events with brothers such as dinners, friend’s apartments. Participating in sports with the fraternity, performing for the fraternity and all the brother events in general.

Do you have any words of advice for younger brothers and potential brothers?

Stick with the process. Everything you learn during it and the things you do as a brother will change you and the community as a whole. It will give you a different perspective of backgrounds, cultures, tolerance and become a much more educated person in society.

How did you hear about Pi Delta Psi?

How I hear of Pi Delta Psi was from my older brother, Chris Tran. Being my older sibling and a charter for Northeastern University’s Pi Delta Psi Chapter he was the first individual that sparked my interest in this fraternal brotherhood.

Why did you join Pi Delta Psi?

There are multiple reasons why I joined Pi Delta Psi Fraternity Inc. What mainly attracted me at first is the whole idea of a brotherhood, a fraternal order, this idea of a family. I had joined other student organizations on campus during my freshman year here at Northeastern University and yet I was not gaining much from just being in a group. Just going to general meetings every week, going to each organizations events, I did not feel a sense of accomplishment, a sense of belonging on this campus. Hearing about Pi Delta Psi since even high school from my older brother and all that he accomplished in school up till then I wanted to accomplish something myself, do something life changing, meaningful. This fraternity was the best and only option for me. It offered so many opportunities of growth and development, along with a vast amount of social networking while providing many challenges that would help develop me into the man I am today. My own brother informed me that it was a life changing process that will allow you to learn more about yourself, both the good and the bad. It would open your eyes to a lot more of the college experience than doing anything else during your college career. This is what hooked me into joining Pi Delta Psi, a fraternity of elite men.

Has Pi Delta Psi changed you since you became a brother?

Pi Delta Psi has definitely changed me as a person since I joined. I have acquired a stronger sense of confidence in everything I do. It has given me a huge growth in my verbal ability and public speaking. After becoming a brother more responsibilities were placed upon my shoulders causing me to have to multitask in many situations. This help me develop a skill that I know I would need in the future, to be able to handle a variety of situations all at once and make a strong and precise decisions knowing full well that it would have an affect greater than just towards myself. The whole fraternity rests upon decisions that brothers make on a day to day basis especially now that I have become an executive board member. The greatest thing I have to say I gained and that changed after becoming a brother is my sense of leadership. I would have to say that I definitely have a stronger sense of leadership now that I have become and older brother of this fraternity. I have assisted in educating a class, educated a class myself, along with becoming a big brother passing down what ever wisdom I have gained so far. My mistakes, my accomplishments, my ideas, I share them all with my kids, my little, and my brothers in hope that it will help in some way shape or form. Pi Delta Psi makes leaders of college men and I believe it made me a great one.

What is your most memorable moment since you became a brother?

My most memorable moment since I have become a brother would have to be the moment I had crossed into this fraternity with 6 PBs. This moment will be etched in my memory forever. The feeling of accomplishment, excitement, pure joy of what I had just done, the Fraternity I had just entered. Everything I had worked for was paying off and crossing is one of the greatest feelings in the world. I would now be able to take everything I learned during our process and do something with it in respects to the brotherhood. It was like a new beginning in my college career a new start a time to work hard for a common goal, learn along the way, and always ALWAYS have fun. What is a brotherhood without having as much fun as the amount of work you have put in.

Do you have any words of advice for younger brothers and potential brothers?

For younger brother and potential brothers, you might believe that when old brothers say joining this fraternity is a life altering process but honestly it is. You guys are young excited to get involved but take your time do not rush it, enjoy your experience with Pi Delta Psi and the college life. Remember all you learn through older brothers, your PBs and even at times youngins when you guys are older. Pi Delta Psi is what ever you guys make of it, so always remember to rep them letters and rep them hard because all you guys are the future of the fraternity and will eventually take over. So use your time when you become a brother wisely put into the fraternity as much as what you want to get out of it. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes because you know other brothers will have your back. Just learn from them and strive forward to accomplish so much more. DO IT UP HAVE FUN AND ALWAYS REMEMBER AY

Pi Delta Psi’s primary mission is to spread Asian-American Cultural Awareness in an attempt to bridge the gap between various Asian-American subgroups. As a cultural fraternity, Pi Delta Psi tries to educate the community so as to prevent future bias and judgmental conclusions. The fraternity believes that by promoting the education of different cultures,it can expand the horizons of its members and not only better the individual but future generations as well.
